Target Audience:
This activity is intended for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who wish to develop or improve their Spanish-speaking skills and provide culturally appropriate care for Spanish-speaking patients.

Credit Hours and Course Requirements:
1. This online, self-paced activity provides 12 hours of knowledge-based, home study (with enduring materials) continuing
pharmacy education (CPE) credit, including 6 hours video and 6 hours independent study
with active learning and assessment.
2. Participants will have 60 days to complete the six online lessons of the course (each at approximately
one hour of run time) and to pass each of the six assessments (one per lesson). Participants will be
given three attempts to successfully achieve a score of 70% or better on each assessment.
3. In order to receive CPE credit, participants must listen to all recorded content, participate in the
active learning exercises, pass the post-assessment exams, and complete an online evaluation at
the at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy website https://utcop.learningexpressce.com/.
No partial credit will be given.
4. All continuing pharmacy education credits will be reported to CPE Monitor within 60 days of
completion of the activity evaluation and may be accessed on your profile at NABP.net.

Following completion of this activity, the participant (pharmacist) should be able to:

(Module 1)

1. Compare the Spanish alphabet to the English alphabet.
2. Identify the sound(s) made by each Spanish letter.
3. Differentiate multiple sounds made by the same letter.
4. Indicate which syllable in a word will receive the stress.
5. Identify the correct pronunciation of sample words commonly used in conversation and in a pharmacy setting.

(Module 2)

6. Identify the meanings of Spanish adjectives commonly in patient or medication descriptions.
7. Select the correct adjective form to agree with a noun based on gender and number.
8. Determine the appropriate pronoun to be used to refer to oneself, to address a patient, and to refer to a patient.
9. Compare the placement of descriptive adjectives in English and Spanish.
10. Distinguish parts of speech.

(Module 3)

11. Identify the meanings of Spanish verbs commonly needed in a pharmacy setting.
12. Indicate the proper conjugated form that should be used when directly addressing a patient/customer.
13. Differentiate the usages of similar verbs.
14. Select the correct form of each verb when using two verbs together in order to ask questions and deliver instructions.

15. Indicate greetings in Spanish.
16. Specify problems in understanding spoken Spanish in order to gain clarification.
17. Contrast the naming system used by Spanish speakers with that of English speakers in order to correctly file patients in the system.
18. Identify numbers in Spanish.
19. Indicate the current time and at what time the patient should return in Spanish.
20. Differentiate question words in Spanish.

(Module 5)

21. Identify body parts in Spanish.
22. Specify symptoms and medical conditions in Spanish.
23. Identify Spanish phrases for discussing medical insurance.
24. Indicate prescription status and problems with refills in Spanish.
25. Determine patient information in Spanish.

(Module 6)

26. Identify prescription and over-the-counter medications in Spanish.
27. **For pharmacists: Counsel patients in Spanish on over-the-counter medications to take for stated symptoms.
**pharmacy technicians: Guide patients to the appropriate OTC section based on what the patient is seeking.
28. Arrange in order accurate directions for use in Spanish.
29. Determine drug allergies and medication the patient is currently taking in Spanish.
30. Specify warnings of side effects and drug interactions in Spanish.
